Chicago’s 29th Ward needs a green economics plan

Candidate Zerlina Smith has a vision for the future of the 29th Ward. She sees solar panels installed on apartment buildings, on thriving local businesses, on neighborhood public schools and on private homes, each one lowering the energy costs for residents. She sees a workers’ co-op of local green energy experts who install solar energy devices and retrofit buildings for energy efficiency, cost savings and job creation. She sees more...

Rahm tells a Whopper

One of Rahm Emanuel’s specialities is The Whopper. No, not the greasy concoction they sell at Burger King, but another unhealthy concoction people are  expected to swallow cheerfully: The Big Lie. Rahm is lying in his latest TV campaign ad where he claims he is,”…fighting for pre-K access for every 4-year-old, no matter where they live.” That’s a lie that hurts small children, who are among the most vulnerable people  in our society....

There are always a certain number of signatures that have to be tossed out because of incorrect addresses, the person not living in the ward or for other...

Body cameras and civilian police review boards won’t be enough

For days now now the USA has experienced countless demonstrations in the wake of  grand jury refusals to indict in the police killings of  Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Who hasn’t heard of “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” and “I can’t breathe”? Led by a new generation of activist Black youth, these multi-racial protests have blocked streets and highways across the nation. Here in Chicago protesters have occupied Lake Shore Drive, King...
